The Playground Theatre

“It’s 1999 and jaded 26-year-old pop star, Kid Pop, finds himself in court, after being caught red handed in a drug fuelled tabloid sting. An understanding judge gives Kid the choice between jail time or six weeks in a rehabilitation centre. It seems a no-brainer: rehab will be a holiday. But how could Kid have got it so wrong?”

Review by Richard Lambert, 5 Stars

Hilarious, brilliantly cast, beautifully constructed and fabulous singing all sit on a foundation of a solid story. A rare treat in theatre these days!

Right now there is some terrible theatre out there so with some trepidation I ventured over to the beautiful Playground Theatre. It was well worth it! It’s what a night out at the theatre should be – entertaining, fun, talented and so worth the effort.

It’s got a cast of 11, a live band of 4, and a huge production team. Anyone remember Don Black? He’s known for collaborations with Andrew Lloyd-Webber as well as James Bond themes such as Thunderball, The Man with the Golden Gun and Diamonds are Forever. His son, Grant Black wrote this musical, alongside Murray Lachlan Young. Another family member, Clive Black, produced the show. It’s clearly a musical family!

Everything about this show is so good – the directing, choreography, set design, musical arrangements, script, cast, sound, operating. There isn’t a weak link anywhere.
