With a Michael Jackson tribute show touring the UK, how could you go wrong? Commercially, this is a brilliantly successful production. Showing at the Hippodrome in Golder’s Green, taken over by the Hillsong church, The Man in the Mirror was a few minutes late in starting due to the queues outside, the bag searches and the ticketing process. A popular show with many overheard saying “this is the first time I’ve been here”. I doubt it will be the last as it’s a beautiful venue!

An impressive start with lighting silhouettes, and video design beaming out from the stage into the audience. The sound levels nicely balanced with no need for ear plugs. A really great band of four musicians.

Impressive authentic choreography and a dance troupe of four started the night with some characteristic Military pop songs Michael loved so much.

The lighting was well matched to the tracks and there are certainly challenges in doing one-nighter tours with so many lighting cues. The saving grace is that with pop concerts you can sometimes get away with fewer special pickup positions and have 500 light beams looking spectacular while only one actually lights the performer – one key follow spot on the main singer does the trick here.

The video was truly impressive. Lots of content, again, bespoke to the era and in sync with the tracks.

The costumes were not so stunning. Not great choices and poorly fitted. And although CJ as Michael Jackson moves well, the vocals aren’t quite up to Michael’s. I suppose that is to be expected. Occasional backing vocal tracked supported the mix, but fundamentally, and particularly as evidenced in “You are not alone” the pitch and nasality wasn’t exactly “a tribute” and unless you know the lyrics many songs were indecipherable.

But having said that, this is a great night out for the thousands of MJ fans.

Who wouldn’t once again like a return to his song list to bring back so many memories?
