The Watch
The Glitch
28 May – 9 June
“Fusing tender romantic comedy with dreamlike storytelling, Isabella Waldron’s The Watch is a contemporary love story that explores the delicate dance between time, intimacy, and identity.
When insomniac Hannah meets clockmaker Zoe, days blur into nights, reality gives way to desire, and love becomes both fleeting and infinite — unraveling a profound exploration of trust, timing, and the delicate art of letting someone in.
The Watch navigates the messy, tender, and transformative terrain of young queer love, capturing the fragility of time, the complexity of identity, and the beauty of human connection in all its imperfect forms.”
Review by Richard Lambert, 3 Stars
This is a UK Premiere of a new play by Isabella Waldron and it’s both intriguing and fascinating. The dramaturg is spot on and coming in at 1 hour it’s a perfect night out to enjoy the Lower Marsh Waterloo area and then continue with drinks, meet and greets in the bar above on the entrance level of the venue.
The venue itself is a basement cellar bearing all the hallmarks of the Vaults grunge but without the damp walls. With the sound of water moving through pipework, air cons kicking on and off, vertical steel girder supports, the venue itself lends very well to some genre of plays – particularly of the “intimate plays” variety.
The play’s title is intricately woven into the story-talling. It’s both an actual watch that needs to be repaired as well as a name given to a period of awakening when one is on a natural sleep pattern – here presented as more than one session per 24 hours.
Lighting designer Jack Hathaway does a grand job with the lighting and has installed some additional illuminated signage that sign-posts the location. Integrating one of the vertical steel girders of the venue into the Bus Stop sign being one creative brilliant solution. All the lighting states are sensitively considered and work extremely well!
Director Merle Weldon makes some great choices in the blocking and clever use of the challenging space.
Add in some very fine acting from both performers and you’ve got a delicious night out that’s unexpected, quirky and well worth attending!
